Biologicals (N fixation or Increase NUE) Standard Protocol

Biologicals (N Fixation, Increase Nitrogen Use Efficiency): The use of biologicals to reduce N applications in fields is being widely tested. Some biological products may reduce the need for nitrogen fertilizer inputs while maintaining crop yields. Improved nitrogen use efficiency can lead to reduced environmental nitrogen losses. Participation in these trials offers an opportunity to assess the efficacy of biological products in reducing recommended nitrogen rates without sacrificing yield. Use of such products could potentially contribute to better nitrogen management and groundwater protection in Nebraska. For biological products that may replace a portion of fertilizer N, it is critical to evaluate them at N rates below the expected economic optimum N rate (EONR), as defined by UNL recommendations.
